We looked at two nightmare transfer scenarios that Sheffield Wednesday will desperately be hoping to avoid in January.

It has been an excellent first half of the season for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, but the January transfer window could determine whether they have any chance of achieving promotion this season.

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Wednesday have made clear progress this campaign under manager Danny Rohl, and they currently sit 10th in the table, three points from the play-off places.

With a two-week break from Championship action due to the FA Cup, Rohl will be looking to use that time productively, but so far, there has been just one departure from Hillsborough, with midfielder Sean Fusire joining Carlisle United on loan.

Transfer speculation is continuing to gather pace as the January transfer window progresses, and we looked at two nightmare scenarios that Rohl will be desperately hoping to avoid this month.

Josh Windass departs for Santos

Forward Josh Windass has been a key player for Wednesday since joining the club from Wigan Athletic five years ago, and while he has come up with a number of crucial goals during that time, he will forever be remembered for the 123rd-minute winner he scored against Barnsley in the League One play-off final at Wembley in 2023 to seal promotion for his side.

It looked as though Windass' time at Hillsborough was set to come to an end in the summer after talks over a new contract stalled, but after a late intervention from Rohl, he did eventually commit his future to the Owls.

Rohl will certainly be glad that the club were able to reach an agreement as Windass has enjoyed one of the most productive seasons of his career so far, scoring 10 goals and providing two assists in 24 league appearances, and he is currently among the top scorers in the Championship.

Unfortunately for Wednesday, it seems that Windass' form has not gone unnoticed, and the 31-year-old confirmed last Sunday that Brazilian side Santos have made a bid for him.

It remains to be seen whether Windass is keen to reunite with his former Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha at Santos, but as FLW exclusively revealed earlier this week, the Owls have rejected the offer and have no intention of selling their star man this month.

Shea Charles is recalled by Southampton

Midfielder Shea Charles has starred for Wednesday since arriving on a season-long loan from Southampton in the summer, scoring one goal and providing four assists in 23 league appearances so far.

It is fair to say that Charles has not only been one of the Owls' standout players this season, but he has also been one of the best midfielders in the Championship, and his performances have been integral to his side's rise up the table in recent months.

However, the Saints have the option to recall Charles in January, and given that there has been a recent change of management at St Mary's, Ivan Juric may be keen to bring him back to the South Coast to help in the fight against relegation from the Premier League.

It was claimed last month that Charles is also on the radar of West Ham United, Leicester City and Atalanta, so there is a possibility that Southampton could decide to terminate the midfielder's spell at Hillsborough in order to cash in on him.

There is no doubt that it would be a devastating blow for Wednesday if they were to lose Charles this month, but as speculation over his future increases, they may need to start preparing for life without the Northern Ireland international.
