Manchester City will take part in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup this summer. It is a special achievement for City to have earned a place in the prestigious tournament. However, there is also a debate to be had about the merit of the tournament existing due to the amount of football the players currently play. But ahead of the tournament, it remains unknown if Kevin De Bruyne will play for Manchester City in the United States.

In quotes relayed by Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail, Kevin De Bruyne is unsure if he’ll play at the Club World Cup. He explained: “I don’t know [about the Club World Cup]. For me, it will depend on whatever happens in the future, depending on what team I’ll go and what competition I’ll play. And also if the new team doesn’t want me to play, doesn’t want to risk whatever happens.

Tom Bogert has reported for GIVEMESPORT, that Kevin De Bruyne is hoping to have a decision made this month on his next club. That way, he can decide if he can play at the Club World Cup for Manchester City Bogert adds. De Bruyne would have to negotiate this with any new club as per Bogert’s report. Furthermore, Bogert reports that MLS side Chicago Fire are the favourites to sign De Bruyne at this stage. Lastly, Bogert reports that the Chicago Fire have De Bruyne’s discovery rights in the MLS, which gives them the first opportunity to negotiate with the Manchester City legend.

De Bruyne may have bigger priorities this summer.

The potential of Kevin De Bruyne ending his Manchester City career at the Club World Cup could be a storybook ending to his time at the club. If he could help inspire City to success in the United States it would nearly be the perfect ending to his trophy-laden spell at the club. De Bruyne remains an important player for Manchester City, and if he played at the tournament he’d likely have a key role to play.

But it would be understandable if De Bruyne didn’t play in the tournament. He has more pressing matters to address in the summer. Finding a new club being the major one. Plus, it would be unlikely that De Bruyne would jeopardize any potential move by playing at the Club World Cup.

It’s a story with many moving parts but De Bruyne’s future will take priority over playing at the tournament for Manchester City. That’s understandable given the position that De Bruyne is currently in.
