Former Liverpool Midfielder Reacts to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Expected Real Madrid Move

It wouldn’t be an international break without some drama, but this time there’s a lot more substance and pure controversy. This is of course referring to the reports that Trent Alexander-Arnold has agreed terms with Real Madrid ahead of a free transfer move this summer upon the expiry of his current deal at Liverpool.

The 26-year-old has been at the club for 20 years, and has since become one of the best players in the world whilst winning every trophy possible at his boyhood club. But now, the enjoyment in that doesn’t seem enough for the full-back who is ready to swap his legacy for a life of luxury over in the Spanish capital.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy spoke exclusively to Anfield Index and shared his thoughts on Alexander-Arnold’s reported move…

“It’s a Wonderful Opportunity!”

“I understand both perspectives that you can look at it from,” began Murphy, “He has won everything there is to win at Liverpool.”

“Sometimes players aren’t just thinking about a footballing change, but they sometimes want a cultural change too,” continued Murphy.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for him to go and play at the biggest club in the world.”

Of course, not many players get the opportunity to play for Real Madrid and their track record in Europe speaks for itself – Trent will know that as much as anyone.

However, the issue that Liverpool fans find is with the way that Alexander-Arnold has handled the situation and also the fact that the Reds will not receive a single penny from the move.

Murphy also responded to those points…

Should Liverpool Have Cashed in?

“I say good luck to him, but people will be very disappointed that Liverpool won’t get any sort of fee from the move,” said Murphy.

“Liverpool could’ve cashed in on him once they realised he wasn’t keen on signing a new deal,” continued Murphy, “Usually with two years left, any player of value either signs a new contract or is sold, that’s just how it goes.”

“But I don’t really understand the rage towards Trent over it.”

The issue with this view is that many believe that this move has been in the pipeline for a considerable amount of time, with Madrid more than happy to be patient and wait to capture Trent on a free transfer. This was further aided by the incredible form of Dani Carvajal before his major injury earlier this season, meaning there was no real rush for the Spanish giants to pay a transfer fee and land the Liverpool defender sooner.

Many will claim that Trent has put his own signing fee ahead of his boyhood club, who won’t see a single penny from this move.

With the Merseyside Derby against Everton on the horizon and a Premier League title still needing to be won, it will be interesting to see whether the latest developments will have any impact on the remainder of Liverpool’s season.
