Arne Slot is set to be boosted by the return of a key attacker
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot could welcome back Cody Gakpo from injury for Tuesday night’s Champions League last-16 second league clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
Gakpo missed last week’s first leg at the Parc des Princes after not taking part in a training session the day prior and subsequently sat out Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Southampton at the weekend.
However, in a massive boost for the Reds ahead of the return leg against PSG - as well as Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle - Gakpo was present for an open training session on Monday.
This will raise hopes he could be in contention for both games.
Though, given Gakpo’s last start was a month ago in the Merseyside derby draw with Everton, it could be that he is named among the substitutes against PSG as Slot does not need to take any risks.
Darwin Nunez, fresh off scoring against Southampton, will be pushing to retain his place in the starting lineup over Diogo Jota and his impact for Harvey Elliott’s winner in Paris just might give him the edge.
Another option for Slot is to go without a recognised centre-forward. This tactical set-up worked a treat in the recent 2-0 win over Manchester City and that would mean a start for Curtis Jones.
Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister are likely to earn recalls having been partially rested to the bench at the weekend, whilst Dominik Szoboszlai should be fine to start despite being substituted at half-time against the Saints amid fears over his physical condition.
Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Nunez
Doubt: Gakpo
Injured: Morton, Gomez, Bradley
