Arne Slot Reflects on Liverpool’s Record-Breaking Start

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his pride in the club’s remarkable start to the season, while maintaining that trophies remain the ultimate goal. Following a 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League, Slot’s side achieved an impressive milestone—winning 11 out of their first 12 games, setting a new club record.

Historic Start for Liverpool Under Slot

Liverpool’s strong start to the season under Arne Slot has broken records, but Slot is focused on more than just setting benchmarks. Wednesday’s win against Leipzig marked another achievement: Liverpool have now secured six successive away victories for the first time at the start of a season. Speaking after the match, Slot acknowledged the significance of the feat while keeping his eyes on the bigger prize.

“We should be proud because so many great teams have worn this shirt and so many great managers have been at the club, so to achieve something that hasn’t been done before is almost impossible and always nice,” Slot said. “But there is something that is much nicer than records and you know what I mean by that — trophies.”

Liverpool’s Dominance on Display

Darwin Nunez’s decisive goal in the first half secured Liverpool’s win, but Slot was quick to point out that the performance went beyond just the goal. After a slow start, Liverpool settled into their rhythm, dictating much of the game’s pace and creating multiple chances. Despite a late surge of pressure from Leipzig, Slot praised his team’s control throughout the match.

“I don’t think we started the game very well but after the first 15 minutes I liked a lot of what I saw,” he said. “We played through their press and opened up attacks many times, which led to the first goal and many other chances. It is a pity at the end of a game like that when you need big roles from your two centre-backs and goalkeeper. A game like that should have been ours after 60 to 70 minutes.”

Slot also praised Nunez for his all-round contribution, saying, “Darwin was strong, comfortable on the ball, fighting if he had to defend, and he made it very difficult for the two centre-backs of Leipzig.”

Preparing for the Challenges Ahead

As the season progresses, Slot is already thinking about managing his squad through a demanding fixture list. Mo Salah was substituted just after the hour mark during the Leipzig game, with Slot hinting that the decision was made with one eye on Sunday’s crucial Premier League match against Arsenal. The Liverpool boss also noted that injuries were beginning to take a toll on the team, meaning careful rotation would be needed in the coming months.

“It is a tough fixture list. Curtis Jones was the same, he hasn’t played 90 minutes yet,” Slot said. “We have some injuries now so I have to take care of the players. Sunday is a big game coming up and I need to use as many players as I can for these tough months.”

Focus on Trophies

While Slot’s Liverpool may be setting records, his primary focus remains on silverware. The team’s strong start puts them in a favourable position for the challenges ahead, but Slot’s ultimate ambition is to deliver trophies to Anfield. With tough fixtures on the horizon, including the looming battle with Arsenal, the Liverpool manager is determined to ensure his squad remains fresh and competitive in the long run.

By maintaining this focus on both performance and player welfare, Slot is guiding Liverpool into a period that may deliver not just records, but the kind of silverware that makes history.
