Luis Fernando Díaz Marulada, the electrifying Colombian winger, was born today (January 13) in 1997. To celebrate this occasion, we look back on his inspiring journey from humble beginnings to the grand stage of European soccer.

Early Days: A Barrancas Boy Makes Good

Díaz was raised in the town of Barrancas on the Guajira peninsula in the north-east of Colombia. He attended a soccer academy run by his father before his talents were spotted during a tryout for Atlético Junior, one of Colombia’s most renowned clubs. They signed him and promptly loaned him out to Barranquilla FC, both to gain experience (and weight… he was considered malnourished as a teen). After one year he was recalled to Atlético Junior’s senior team, where he showcased his flair, pace, and eye for goal. In two years Díaz became a fan favorite and a host of international admirers.
