David Wilkinson has revealed that the Hatters won't make a knee-jerk decision despite a slow start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Luton Town chairman David Wilkinson has revealed that he is still fully behind Rob Edwards despite the club's underwhelming start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Speaking to Luton Today, he pointed to Watford as a reason why the club wasn't going to make the decision to sack Edwards early on in the season.

The Hatters have played eight league games so far this season, winning just two of those games, drawing two and losing the other four.

This has left the club in 20th place, which isn't ideal for a team that have only just come down from the Premier League.

Although relegation isn't a serious worry yet, they need to get themselves back on track as quickly as possible, and it looked as though they were going to do that against Oxford United in midweek.

Going 2-0 up in the first half, they looked to be on their way to securing three points, but Tyler Goodrham and Ruben Rodrigues' goals allowed the U's to take a point back to the Kassam Stadium.

This was another setback for Luton, who could have easily lost that game, having survived a major penalty shout.

It's clear that things will need to improve if Edwards wants to remain in the top job for the long term - and it could be said that some clubs would have acted by now and sacked him.

The short-term nature of football may have left some fearing for Edwards' job, but the Hatters' chairman remains fully supportive of him.

He told Luton Today: "I think we all know we are better than we are showing so far this season, and I believe it will come.

"However, we all need to stick together to support Rob, the coaches and the squad to pick up the form and generate the excitement that we are used to and expect.

"It is no surprise that we have suffered a bit of hangover from last season when we often played very well without a positive result and lost the winning habit. Momentum is so important both in games and in sequences of results.

"There are 117 points still to play for so let’s play our part in getting as many of them as we can and remember that form is temporary while class is permanent.

"We have quality people operating throughout the club, who, I’m sure, expect us to remain confident in their abilities to turn things round.

"We would not be where we are today by making kneejerk decisions. This has been the unsuccessful philosophy of others, who shall remain nameless."

Luton Town's key players need to step up to help Rob Edwards

Elijah Adebayo hasn't performed very well recently - and he will need to step up if Luton's results are to improve.

Many fans will claim that he needs a spell out of the first team and that viewpoint is completely valid, but Edwards seems to be intent on sticking with him.

With this in mind, the forward has no choice but to step up and prove his worth following a tricky period.

Summer signing Mark McGuinness also needs to ensure that he's as solid as possible alongside Teden Mengi and others, with the latter's contributions helping Luton to win a point on Tuesday.

Luton have the right ingredients to do well, but the players and coaching staff all need to make improvements.
