As Liverpool gear up for their final match of 2024 against West Ham, discussions around squad rotation have taken centre stage. On the latest episode of Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and David Lynch dissected Arne Slot’s potential changes for the away fixture. Both contributors provided valuable insights into Liverpool’s attacking options and the necessity of fresh legs.
David Lynch was quick to point out the importance of rotation, particularly during this congested period. “West Ham are at home and have Jared Bowen, who can tear you apart on his own if he wants to,” Lynch remarked. The physicality and intensity of a big pitch like the London Stadium often demand tactical flexibility.
The conversation turned towards West Ham’s recent absences, with Lynch adding: “They’re going to miss key players like Max Kilman and potentially Rodri.” While this benefits Liverpool, Slot must carefully manage his resources to maintain the Reds’ dominant form.
One of the key takeaways from the discussion was the likelihood of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota featuring prominently. Lynch noted: “Jota is ready now, and I think we’ll see him start this one and probably United as well.” His ability to lead the line with clinical precision makes him a vital asset.
Meanwhile, Dave Davis emphasised Diaz’s readiness to step up after limited minutes recently. “Diaz is an obvious candidate to come in now,” Davis said, hinting at a dynamic role for the Colombian on the left flank.

With Dominik Szoboszlai unavailable, the panel speculated on who could fill the void. “Harvey Elliott is surely ready now to play more minutes,” Davis suggested, alluding to the youngster’s creativity and energy. Lynch agreed but also floated the possibility of sticking with a McAllister-Jones-Gravenberch midfield trio, which provides both stability and flair.
Lynch stressed the significance of squad depth, saying, “This is the time where the strength of your squad is tested.” He highlighted Liverpool’s depth as a key advantage, with players like Kostas Tsimikas ready to slot in at left-back and Joe Gomez likely to feature in central defence.
Both contributors agreed that the Reds are better positioned than many rivals to handle the festive period. “The Christmas schedule always favours big teams like Liverpool, who are used to playing three games a week,” Davis observed. Such rhythm can be overwhelming for mid-table teams, offering Liverpool a significant edge.
As the Reds travel to London, all signs point to Arne Slot making calculated changes to keep his squad fresh and competitive. With Jota and Diaz expected to start, and midfield tweaks on the cards, Liverpool appear ready to tackle West Ham’s challenge head-on. Maintaining their seven-point lead at the top of the table will require not just skill, but strategic squad management during this pivotal period.
