De Bruyne’s grandfather is a Liverpool supporter, adding a sentimental angle to the speculation.

Additionally, a move to Merseyside would allow De Bruyne and his family to remain in the Manchester area, where they have lived for the past decade.

The legendary Man City midfielder has still not ruled out a move to another Premier League club.

“It could be possible,” he told Viaplay recently.

“It is very difficult to say at the moment. The decision to leave City has only just been made. It’s only been a week, and I haven’t even seen my family again. We’ll see.”

While a transfer to Liverpool would be surprising, it cannot be ruled out at this stage.
