The Cameroon international’s future is up in the air ahead of the summer transfer window following another mixed campaign from the former Inter Milan player.

Onana drew criticism for being at fault for the two goals Man United conceded in last month’s 2-2 draw with Lyon and was subsequently dropped for the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

The 29-year-old has also made three errors leading directly to goals in the Premier League, although he has pulled off some impressive saves this season.

It’s understood that Martinez replacing Onana between the sticks at Man United next season is a distinct possibility.

The 2022 World Cup winner was in an emotional state following Aston Villa’s final home match of the season, a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, leaving the pitch in tears.

That sparked theories that this may be Martinez’ final season at Villa Park ahead of a summer move.

Speaking after the game, Villa manager Unai Emery would not confirm if Martinez would still be at the club next season.

“Now we are focused on the matches we are playing. It is the last match here,” he said.

“I don’t know. We will see. We will see about the team, the players. They are responding and are so focused on how we are preparing each match.

“We have more points to play for against Manchester United. We will see how we can get better for the next season.”

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed there is a “huge, concrete possibility” Martinez will leave the club this summer. The goalkeeper is said to have received an “approach” from Saudi Arabia and is also “hearing proposals” from European clubs. His “priority” is to stay in Europe ahead of next year’s World Cup.
