Manchester United players are desperate for Ruud van Nistelrooy to be included as part of the backroom staff of head coach Ruben Amorim, according to the Sun.
The Dutchman was named interim manager after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday, and he has expressed a desire to remain at the club after the Portuguese takes over.
Van Nistelrooy joined Ten Hag as an assistant manager in the summer, and the Man United players have grown close to him after he quickly formed a bond with them.
The former Red Devils star is easier to communicate with compared to his departed compatriot, and the playing staff have made their feelings clear internally that they want him to stay on.
However, the call could be that of Amorim alone to make as he will be coming with his own coaches.
The 39-year-old is expected to bring his three assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital and fitness coach Paulo Barrera to Man United, which could leave no room for Van Nistelrooy.
He will remain in charge when Man United take on Chelsea, PAOK Thessaloniki and Leicester City ahead of the international break later this month, and will look to convince Amorim that he has something valuable to offer.
The 48-year-old got the players firing on all cylinders in their 5-2 victory over Leicester on Wednesday, and winning the next three games could help boost his chances of remaining at the club.
However, given that most managers love to work only with their already trusted allies when they move to a new club, chances are Amorim will not be keen on having Van Nistelrooy as part of his backroom staff.
The Portuguese would have already likely made up his mind concerning the Dutchman, and the Man United stars will be hoping it is a favourable one as they really want him around when the new regime begins.
