Manchester United 0 Newcastle United 2 – Monday 30 December 8pm
The easiest of wins for United.
Eddie Howe making it four wins out of five in the last five meetings with Man U.
The only negative, if there is one, that Newcastle United weren’t four ahead or more by the time we got to to the break.
Tonali hitting the post, Isak trying a far too clever chip when one on one with Onana, as well as a number of other first half chances.
United were still two up though and had won the game inside 19 minutes.
Yet another turbocharged start saw the black and whites straight at them.
The last two Premier League matches saw United ahead withing 30 seconds and then within 90 seconds, this time it took almost four minutes!
A smart move and then ball out to Hall on the left, his cross taking a slight deflection and Isak in amongst their three central defenders to head powerfully home.
It was all Newcastle and zero surprise when another cross from the left, this time Gordon the provider, Joelinton on the end of it with the top of his shoulder to give Onana no chance again.
It was then a case of how many?
As it happened, that was the end of the scoring.
Newcastle United should have added a few more goals before the break but failed to do so, then almost fell for a suckerpunch just before half-time when Schar had a brain freeze and gifted the ball on the edge of his own box under no pressure. The ball played to Casemiro but his effort curled well wide.
Man U had an effort on target in that first half according to the stats but I can’t recall it.
What the stats also show is that it was the first and last one they had all night.
Eddie Howe clearly had his team determined to take no unnecessary risks after that Schar moment and the second half was pretty uneventful.
Newcastle could have added one or two more but it was a more even affair, even though Man U struggled to really create much of note.
Maguire hit the post with a header but Dubravka looked as though he had it covered if inside the post.
The game played out to ever increasing numbers of empty seats, as United made it five wins in a row and Man U made it six defeats in their last seven domestic games.
What a night!
It would have been great to have added the extra goals that the play deserved but no need to get greedy, NUFC hopefully saved a few for these next two matches in North London, bring on Spurs and Arsenal.
The only small downside tonight was that Schar picked up a fifth PL booking, so will miss the Spurs match.
