Marash Kumbulla discussed his experience at Espanyol ahead of his imminent return from loan to Roma.

“Here everyone made me feel at ease straight away: both the coach and my teammates,” Kumbulla told TMW.

“At first I was a bit hesitant, because of the fact of changing city and country. But it took just a week, I settled in really well and I felt like I was in Italy: the difference is the language, but culturally Spain and Italy are very similar.”

“Even the fact of playing helps a lot, because you relate to your teammates with much more intensity than when you don’t play from the beginning. Now I’m in love with the city,” he said of Barcelona.

On his spell at Roma, the defender said, “I arrived in the post-Covid market, I started off well: then there was a moment in which I still played, but I was more of an alternative. And I think I’m the type of player who needs consistency, but more than anything because physically I’m someone who needs to always play and train well. Maybe after a while, also being young, I wasn’t able to manage everything.”

“Then the various injuries, but especially the main one to my knee, penalized me. But I also had a lot of good competition: I knew I had strong players in front of me. Then obviously everyone would always want to play and you’re not happy when you play. But I’ll give you an example: there was a period with Mourinho in which we won a lot of games 1-0. What could I say to him?”

“My future? I want to try to continue in this vein, in the sense of continuity and consistency in playing. I don’t know what the future will be: surely at the end of the season I will return to Rome, because I am on a dry loan. And then I don’t know what will happen, but surely what I want is to try to have as much continuity as possible, as I had this year.”

“Having seen how things work here I don’t close the doors to the possibility of returning to Spain. However I really don’t know anything and in the meantime I’m thinking about closing the season well here.”
