Enzo Maresca has made it clear that Enzo Fernández will not be leaving Chelsea, despite recent speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
The Argentine midfielder had a challenging start at Stamford Bridge following his £106 million move from Benfica two years ago. With the club in a period of transition, Fernández initially found it difficult to live up to expectations. However, under Maresca's guidance, he's started to flourish.
Playing alongside fellow big-money signing Moisés Caicedo, Fernández has delivered a series of impressive displays in recent months, becoming a key figure in Chelsea’s push for a top-four finish and a return to Champions League football.
Although he still has seven years remaining on his current deal, reports suggest Fernández has caught the eye of Real Madrid, with incoming boss Xabi Alonso believed to be keen on reshaping the Spanish giants’ midfield.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s vital match against Nottingham Forest, Maresca was firm in his response to the rumours “Enzo is a main player for us, one of the captains, one of the leaders.
“This season he has been very, very good. He can be even better next season starting from the first day.
“So, nothing to say about speculation. He is focused on us and that’s the most important thing.”
When directly asked if Fernández would remain at the club next season, Maresca responded simply: ‘yes’.
