Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has revealed that "selfish" reasons led him to the decision to turn down Liverpool's transfer approach last summer.
The Euro 2024 winner was in high demand following Spain's triumph. After an impressive season at the base of La Real's midfield in La Liga and the Champions League, Zubimendi was singled out as Liverpool's top transfer target to belatedly replace the void left by the departure of Fabinho.
Despite an extensive pursuit from Arne Slot's side, the 25-year-old opted to stay at his boyhood club, a decision he made to ensure that he would become a better footballer in the long run.
"I went on vacation, and it caught me by surprise," Zubimendi said of Liverpool's interest in an interview with El Diario Vasco. "It wasn't something I had planned. I reacted when the situation arose. It was an uncomfortable time for me. But I weighed the pros and cons and concluded that the best option was to stay."

Zubimendi added: "I looked at my personal progression, who I am, and the club's project. I stayed because I knew this season would be important for me in the team, and I still had steps to take. It wasn't that hard of a decision.
"There were many reasons for my decision, but I was selfish and thought about what was best for me. And that was staying."
Ryan Gravenberch has thrived for Liverpool this season in the defensive midfield role which Zubimendi would have occupied, but the Reds remain interested in a second run at the Spaniard. Arsenal and Manchester City are also tracking Zubimendi, with the reigning Premier League champions potentially lining up a January bid.
Reports emerged earlier this season claiming that Zubimendi is more open to a transfer in 2025 and the midfielder did not dismiss the suggestion in his recent interview.
"I don't believe in 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunities," he pointedly noted. "If you're good and want to achieve something, it will come to you. There's no need to rush."
