Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay scored the only goal of the game to hand an important victory to Scotland in their Nations League promotion/relegation play-off against Greece on Thursday night.
The Partenopei midfielder won and then converted a penalty just over half an hour in at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Attica on Thursday night. Steve Clarke’s side will host the second leg at Hampden Park on Sunday. The winner of the tie will win a place in the Nations League ‘A’ tier for next season.
McTominay was caught by Greece right-back Lazaros Rota centimetres inside the penalty area while he was trying to make a play for the ball half an hour in.
The former Manchester United midfielder dusted himself down to dispatch his penalty slightly to the right of the centre of the goal past Konstantinos Tzolakis, despite having a lot of lasers directed at him. Lazio’s Christos Mandas was among the Greek substitutes.
There was a Serie A feel about the Scotland side on Thursday night, as Clarke also called upon fellow Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour, Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson as well as Torino’s Che Adams.
McTominay’s goal against Greece puts him into double figures for 2024-25 for club and country, with six goals in Serie A, one in the Coppa Italia and three in the Nations League for Scotland, on top of his four league assists.
