Milan offered their fans another disjointed performance as Feyenoord pulled off a gutsy 1-0 win at De Kuip. As a result, Sergio Conceicao’s charges head into the return leg of this Champions League knockout playoff tie chasing a narrow deficit.
Despite fielding all heavy hitters, including winter signings Joao Felix and Santiago Gimenez, Conceicao didn’t get what he wanted from his team. Indeed, Milan seemed up the creek without a paddle throughout all 90 minutes.
The match couldn’t have started any worse for Milan. Igor Paixao broke the deadlock only three minutes into the game, largely thanks to Mike Maignan’s dreadful attempt to stop his feeble effort from the edge of the box.
However, Milan had more than enough time to return to this contest. Worryingly for the Rossoneri faithful, Conceicao’s side had no idea how to break down Feyenoord’s backline. Apart from Joao Felix’s sporadic individual endeavors, the visitors looked apathetic.
Without further ado, let’s look at our Milan ratings.
Mike Maignan – 3
Who knows how the match would’ve gone had it not been for his epic blunder early on? Atypically for a goalkeeper of his quality to make a mistake like that!
Theo Hernandez – 4
Though he held up his end of the bargain defensively, the French left-back seemed uninterested in doing anything noteworthy in attack until several desperate runs toward the end.
Strahinja Pavlovic – 7.5
Had other Milan players had his will, the game would’ve probably gone in the opposite direction. Salvaged his side on a number of occasions with some excellent last-gasp pieces of defending!
Malick Thiaw – 6.5
The German’s anticipation let him down more than once, eventually leading to a booking for a cynical tackle on Paixao.
Kyle Walker – 6
While no one could go past the Englishman at the back, his attacking shortcomings came to the fore tonight. His offensive ventures were reminiscent of Davide Calabria.
Youssouf Fofana – 5.5
Woeful! The French midfielder lost possession in critical areas several times and was unable to provide safety in front of the defense.
Tijjani Reijnders – 6
Except for occasional flashes of brilliance, the Dutchman had a rare night off, often failing to impact the proceedings despite being given more freedom.
Rafael Leao – 2.5
It feels like the Milan talisman has a nasty tendency to switch off against ‘smaller’ teams. Indifferent for most of the game, he wasn’t the spark his team needed him to be.
Christian Pulisic – 5
No one can accuse the USMNT forward for the lack of trying. However, this wasn’t his night by any stretch of the imagination.
Joao Felix – 7
The Chelsea loanee is arguably the only Milan attacker who had threatened Feyenoord’s goalkeeper tonight. Despite failing to score, he demonstrated phenomenal technique and vision.
Santiago Gimenez – 4.5
Returning to De Kuip as a foe clipped the Mexican’s wings after a dream Serie A debut as he struggled to gain a foothold in the game.
Fikayo Tomori – 6
