Milan Primavera head coach Federico Guidi spoke of his pride regarding how his side overcame Inter on penalties to advance in the Coppa Italia yesterday.
Inter were the big favourites going into the quarter-final. Not only were they at home and higher in the league, but Milan had a much less experienced team out there, though they had won the league derby earlier in the season 3-1.
However, the Rossoneri dug deep and the tie went straight to penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw in normal time. Longoni was the hero as he stopped Lavelli and Pinotti’s spot kicks. Bonomi, Perrucci, Victor Eletu and Perina all scored to earn a 4-2 shootout win.
Guidi gave an interview to Milan TV after the game to give his thoughts, with his side now ready to face Lecce in the semi-final while also aiming to keep climbing in the league.
“There is great enthusiasm. We are happy because I think the penalties did justice to the team that deserved the full result on the pitch. There were many mini-matches within the same match where the boys behaved in a mature manner because we deservedly took the lead,” he said.
“Inter did well to capitalise on the two occasions where we were not precise, we reacted and even turned it around. The boys were really good at not losing heart after the missed penalty that would have made it 3-2.
More Stories / The Match
“There were many emotions within the match where the boys showed themselves to be mature and I am happy for them because they deserve to play in a Coppa Italia semi-final. If we then do this by beating Inter in a quarter-final derby in a one-off match, it is clear that our emotion is even greater.
“Milan hadn’t managed to win on this pitch for many years, the lads did well to do it twice. However, this is just a match that must give us awareness and self-esteem for the rest of the game because it is only one stage of our journey.
“We are happy to have beaten Inter on their pitch for the second time, but we know that the bigger goals of our journey are even further away from us. We have to work hard and continue to do what the lads are doing, that is, train very well to improve every day.
“We have faced teams that in the past have led me to a very very beautiful path, but I don’t want to go further because the next one is a semi-final against Lecce, another extremely strong, competitive and very experienced team. It will be very difficult.
“Then in three days we have Juventus in the league which also in terms of the table is an extremely difficult and important match at the same time. A few hours to celebrate, then focus on Juventus.
“Perina for the penalties? It is proof that I trust everyone. I see them, I am attentive to each of them. He is a boy who has suffered a lot because he is now returning from a serious injury that happened to him last year. He has quality, personality, he is a player with great courage and in my opinion he is another one who has great prospects.
“In his path he will give us a lot of satisfaction. I trust him blindly because I have seen him take penalties many times in training. He went on the pitch and showed that the eyes that evaluate during the week are still a little useful (smiles).”
