Newcastle United made several attempts to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies were willing to pay a premium for the England defender, but they eventually failed to lure him to St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe is still willing to land a top-quality defender in the January window, although he might be operating on a tight budget once again.
According to a report from Sunday Mirror (page 69), Newcastle made enquiries during the summer window to sign AC Milan defender Fiyako Tomori.
The Magpies plotted a £20 million summer move to sign the 26-year-old who won the Serie A title with Milan in 2021-22.
West Ham were also keen to land the defender, but the deal didn’t materialise, with Milan demanding a high transfer fee for the player.
Newcastle will be boosted by the news that Tomori wants to return to England to play in the Premier League for the right club. He has a contract at San Siro until 2027.
Since leaving Chelsea in 2021, Tomori has become a key player for the Rossonerri.
The England international has made over 150 appearances for the Serie A giants in all competitions, and his experiences of playing for a top club would come in handy if the Magpies decide to sign him.
Guehi will probably be their top target once again, but it would be wise for Newcastle to look for quality options elsewhere.
Tomori must have realised by now that playing in the Premier League will open the door for him to represent his country regularly.
Since starting for England in a friendly against Australia a year ago, he has been completely ignored.
Given his age, quality and experience, Tomori would be a great fit at St James’ Park.
