Minnesota United fans unveiled a banner during Eric Ramsay's side's 4-1 win over Inter Miami that took a dig at their MLS rivals' culture.

The Loons eased to victory at Allianz Field and moved above the Herons in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. Goals from Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Anthony Markanich, Robin Lod and Marcelo Weigandt's own goal did the damage for the hosts.

Lionel Messi hit back to make it 2-1 but Javier Mascherano's men were unable to prevent a fourth defeat in five games. To make matters worse, they had to deal with several jibes from the Minneapolis-based outfit including a controversial banner.

Minnesota fans make statement with banner

One of the biggest takeaways from Minnesota's win over Miami was a banner draped in the stands at Allianz Field. It read: "History Over Hype, Culture Over Cash"

This was obviously an insult aimed at their opponents who have become the "money team" of the MLS amid David Beckham's co-ownership. Lionel Messi became the best-paid player in MLS history in 2023 when he was handed a base salary of $10.4m

The Herons is now valued at $1.19bn and are the second richest club in the MLS, while 17th globally. Minnesota doesn't make that list and their highest earner is Robin Lod who earns a purported $1.5m yearly.

Minnesota fans paid homage to the state

Minnesota's banner's main goal was evidently to rile up Miami, which they succeeded with following Beckham's responses. But fans of the Loons have pointed out the significance each symbol featured has with regards to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

A Reddit user suggested that some of these included a Stone Arch Bridge which is a landmark in the state. There was also a North Star that represents the team's crest, the Minnesota state flag, the Loon, and a Megaphone that represents the capos.

The club was founded in 2010 as the NSC Minnesota Stars, eight years before Miami and became known as Minnesota United in 2015. However, soccer in the state extends back to 1976 when a team known as the Minnesota Kicks was born. The Black and Blue

Ramsay's men will look to do their fans proud as the season continues, and next up is a trip to the Houston Dynamo on Thursday, May 15. Meanwhile, Javier Mascherano's Miami will look to bounce back from another defeat against San Jose on the same day.
