Sarina Wiegman has announced her England squad for their two upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. The fixtures will take place at Wembley on May 30th against Portugal and away in Spain on the June 3rd at RCDE Stadium in Barcelona.
Alex Greenwood, Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp will all return after injuries derailed their season.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Ella Morris is the latest Young Lioness to earn a senior call-up after impressing with the U23s and her club.
On Stanway’s return to the England squad, Wiegman said: “I’m thrilled some players return. We still need to build. Georgia is in training. She starts complete training, and we hope she comes into camp and continues building with us.
“Hopefully, she will go to the Euros, which is essential that she’s healthy, that she can handle loads and training loads, and that she can recover from them. And hopefully we have the time to see her at that level.”
While Greenwood and Hemp are back in the squad, the latter has not played a full 90 minutes since November. However, Wiegman believes that they will keep building on this and manage to keep them fit.
“She needs to perform at the highest level, too,” Wiegman said about Hemp. “But she’s shown so many things before she got injured that she built some credit. The World Sevens Tournament will probably see those three players maybe in it.”
Lauren James was not selected due to a hamstring injury, and her potential inclusion for the Euros is uncertain.
“She, of course, like many other players, wants to go to the Euros,” explained Wiegman on James’ situation. “And hopefully, we can get her fit and ready to go.
“Then again, I think these three things are essential. She needs to be healthy. She needs to be able to train and recover from training. and then you can build a bit.
“But it’s also a fact that she performed well. And she developed so quickly and so well. And showed up for Chelsea and for us, I think. Working really hard too. So I just want to give it a chance. She’s a special player who has moments in the game that she can be decisive.”
Wiegman explained her reason for a big England squad of 27 players ahead of their Nations League fixtures.
“I also want to see more players and don’t want to make final decisions now. Because we still have two games to play. And after that, we’ll make final decisions. And so I don’t want to make that decision now for the Euros. I just want to see them in our environment.
“And now maybe have some players out who are still in contention for the Euros squad too. So it’s certainly not made up your mind just yet.”
She spoke about the impact and hoped that with these players returning, they would perform at a higher level, as these three players play an important role on the team.
She jokes that her job is going to be hard, as the competition is really hard for her and her technical staff to make decisions, but it’s a positive position to be in.
When Wiegman called Ella Morris to tell her the news, she could not believe it. Wiegman encouraged her to come in, enjoy, and show what she could do.
“Her physicality, I think, is really good. She has shown some consistency, and I just really want to see how she relates to our team.”
While the new Sevens tournament will occur before the Euros, with Manchester City and United, both clubs with many England internationals, the England manager is unconcerned or sees a big problem with the tournament.
