Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town are reportedly eyeing a move for former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Matic left United during the summer of 2022, after five years at Old Trafford, and ended up joining AS Roma as a free agent,- where he stayed for one season.

He then moved on to Rennes last summer but his time there was short-lived. Matic sealed a switch to fellow Ligue club Lyon in January 2024, where he has been to date.

The Serbian put pen to paper on a contract until the summer of 2026. This season, Matic has made 13 top-flight appearances for Lyon.

According to Foot Mercato, the ex-United man could be headed back to the Premier League, with Ipswich an interested party in his services.

The Tractor Boys are believed to be weighing up a move for Matic as they seek to beat the drop in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

Ipswich are in their first season in the Premier League after a 22-year absence and currently sit in 18th place in the table having gained 16 points.

Foot Mercato state that McKenna’s side admire Matic’s previous experience in England’s top-flight.

They’re not the only club pursuing the 36-year-old. His former Chelsea teammate, Cesc Fabregas, also wants him at Como.

However, they’re set to be disappointed because at the moment, Matic “has no intention” of leaving Lyon. He’s happy there and is “looking to the future with confidence.”

Matic made 183 appearances for United since signing for them from Chelsea in 2017.

Ruben Amorim and his players are back in action on Thursday when they face Arsenal away in the third round of the FA Cup.
