With Eddie Howe out of action with pneumonia, Jason Tindall again took charge, and his side picked up where they left off from in Sunday's 4-1 win over Manchester United.

Jacob Murphy grabbed his 10th league assist of the season in that game, and opened the scoring against the Eagles with his eight league goal of the season.

Very little appeared to be on when he picked up the ball on the right, but he somehow found the near-post top corner with a brilliant strike that flew through Dean Henderson.

The pivotal moments of the game came within two minutes. In the 36th minute, Eberechi Eze had his incredibly meek penalty easily stopped by Nick Pope, and almost right away, he was made to pay for his error as Marc Guéhi turned Harvey Barnes' cross into his own net.

It was the Palace skipper's second own goal against the Magpies this season, making him just the second player in Premier League history to do so in both fixtures of a campaign.

By half-time it was 4-0 and game over as Palace collapsed, conceding two goals in injury time to Barnes and Fabian Schär.

Alexander Isak finally got in on the act just before the hour mark, after some more terrible Palace defending. They gave the ball away trying to play from the back, and the Swede curled a wonderful low effort past Henderson for his 21st league goal of the season, equalling his tally from last season.

With the contest over, the final half hour was played at a slow pace as both sides turned attention to the weekend. Newcastle are now in a very strong position to qualify for the Champions League, and travel to rivals Aston Villa on Saturday.

As for Palace, their brilliant away form in 2025 has been eviscerated in the space of four days, shipping 10 goals since they went 2-0 up early on at Manchester City. Oliver Glasner has a big job on his hands to pick up his players ahead of the upcoming FA Cup semi-final.
