Arsenal make the tough trip to Newcastle this weekend as they visit Eddie Howe’s Magpies at lunchtime on Saturday.

Both sides progressed into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup during midweek, as Newcastle beat Chelsea at St James’ Park and Arsenal prevailed in Preston.

Newcastle face a nervous wait with both Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon to be assessed prior to the game. The Swede is carrying a knock on his toe, whilst Gordon is nursing a groin issue.

Arsenal defender Gabriel will also be assessed after the Brazilian was forced off with a knee injury in his side’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool last weekend.

It has been an inconsistent campaign thus far for Newcastle who sit in 12th position in the Premier League.

Their early season promise has faded away in recent weeks, with Newcastle without a win in five league games. That run includes disappointing defeats to the likes of Fulham and Brighton.

After losing to Chelsea in the Premier League last Sunday, the Magpies got their revenge in midweek when they knocked the West Londoners out of the Carabao Cup. An Alexander Isak strike and an own goal from Axel Disasi just minutes later was enough to seal their place in the next round.

They will be aiming to use that triumph as a platform to rediscover their positive form from the start of the season.

An accomplished performance from Mikel Arteta’s side saw them sweep aside Preston North End with ease on Wednesday night.

17-year-old starlet Ethan Nwaneri curled in a sumptuous goal to double the advantage after Gabriel Jesus had put the visitors in front. Kai Havertz rounded off the scoring in the second half to secure the North London club’s place in the last eight of the Carabao Cup. They will welcome Crystal Palace to the Emirates Stadium in the quarter-finals next month.

However, Arsenal have work to do in the Premier League having fallen five points adrift of leaders Manchester City, following last weekend’s draw with Liverpool.

Last Meeting: Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle, Premier League, 24th February 2024.

Newcastle were no match for Arsenal the last time the two sides met, as the Gunners dominated in North London.

The opening goal was extremely messy as the visitors frantically tried to clear Gabriel’s goalward header. In his attempt to scramble the ball away, Sven Botman flicked the ball into the chest of goalkeeper Loris Karius and marginally over the line.

It didn’t take long for Arsenal to double the deficit as Kai Havertz tapped home from close range.

Newcastle failed to muster an adequate response and the game was put to bed after the interval. Bukayo Saka weaved inside the box and accurately found the bottom corner with a measured finish. Arsenal then profited from another set-piece as Jakub Kiwior headed in his first goal for the club.

The Magpies netted a consolation late on when former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock’s looping header sailed over David Raya’s head, but Arsenal deservedly collected the three points.
