The 24-year-old has now scored 34 goals in just 36 international caps for Norway and his double to down Slovenia smashed a record that had stood almost a century.

Haaland climbed above Jorgen Juve, who scored 33 times in 45 appearances for the national team between 1928 and 1937. The former celebrated his brace by revealing he is expecting his first child, in a night of celebration for the Manchester City striker.

Ex-Aston Villa forward John Carew (24) also features in the top five, just ahead of former Premier League forwards Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Tore Andre Flo (23).
