Inter boss Simone Inzaghi believes that they were denied an obvious penalty during their 1-1 draw with AC Milan in the derby last night.

Milan took the lead right before the half-time interval thanks to Tijjani Reijnders’ emphatic finish after Yann Sommer parried Rafael Leao’s cross/shot into his path, and they managed to hold it for a long time despite wave after wave of pressure,

In the 93rd minute, the Nerazzurri did get the equalising goal with Stefan De Vrij firing in after a deep cross was chested down to him around six yards out by the debutant Zalewski, and that would be the way that the game ended.

Inzaghi spoke to DAZN after the full-time whistle to give his thoughts on yet another dramatic derby, the third this season featuring a late goal, and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.

Has the recent period taken some energy out of you?

“I can’t help but applaud my team for how they went beyond this evening: unfortunately they couldn’t get past the incidents: three disallowed goals, three posts and a clear penalty not given.

“Despite this we managed to get past them. We must also congratulate Milan who never gave up, a team with pace and quality.”

You felt the Pavlovic-Thuram contact was a penalty…

“I don’t feel like talking about it: it’s a broad topic. We come from Bologna and Riyadh, to this match: I hadn’t noticed it on the pitch, then I saw it again. I don’t know the instructions: the referee is there but whoever is sitting can’t not call.

“It can happen, we footballers and coaches make mistakes but it’s starting to be the fourth occasion when I saw some jurisprudence broadcasts about Inter for fouls. Now I’m starting to get angry.”

How do you feel the game unfolded?

“We have an opponent playing in front of us [sitting deep], in the first half they only had the shot to score. We had the game in hand, two goals were rightly disallowed and we should have been better at attacking the space in behind.

“In the 95 minutes we deserved more than the equaliser. That’s football, we move forward with our heads down, we work.”

How did the wing-backs and Zalewski do in your eyes?

“I think he came in well, a quality guy that we were missing from the team. He was ready straight away. A player who will clearly give us a hand.

“In the first half Milan were waiting for us, we didn’t want to allow any counter-attacks: in the 45th minute we conceded one. We could have moved them and played better technically, but it’s still a derby and it’s the 17th game in less than two months…”
