NYCFC vs Minnesota United FC preview: A Sunday afternoon battle

Artikelbild:NYCFC vs Minnesota United FC preview: A Sunday afternoon battle

On Sunday, New York City FC will play a rare Sunday game when they welcome Minnesota United FC to the Big Apple.  The Pigeons are coming off the awful loss against Atlanta United FC which had some great goals but horrible individual defensive mistakes that caused them to lose 4-3.

The Boys in Blue will try to redeem themselves a little by winning at home in front of the fans.  Minnesota will not be an easy game, as is any Major League Soccer matchup, for anything can happen. But after six games, the Loons sit in fourth place in the Western Conference.  They have only lost once, and that was to Los Angeles FC, who also beat NYCFC.  Plus, that was their first game of the season, so they are unbeaten through the last five matches.

Therefore, NYCFC needs to take the offensive performance from Atlanta, the defensive performance from the Columbus Crew draw, and the ability to win at home to create the perfect storm to lead to a win.

So, let’s take a look at a preview of Sunday’s match between NYCFC and Minnesota United.

NYCFC vs Minnesota United FC preview

Date

NYCFC and Minnesota United FC will face one another on Sunday, April 6.

Time

The fixture is at 3:00 PM ET.

Location

The match is at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

How to watch

Supporters can watch the game on Apple TV via the MLS Season Pass.

Weather

The rain from earlier in the day should be done, leading to a cloudy forecast and a temperature around 53 degrees at kickoff.  It will still be damp and a not-so-great day, so it will be interesting to see what the crowd will be like.

Injury report

Jacob Arroyave (knee), Nico Cavallo (leg), Malachi Jones (leg), and Andrés Perea (hip) are unavailable for the match against the Loons.  Tayvon Gray will be available, but it is unknown whether the defender will start.

Players to watch

NYCFC fans should watch Thiago Martins.  Will the captain start after he was responsible for Atlanta’s winning goal last week and acted poorly towards Matt Freese?  If he does, then how will he play?  Will he redeem himself and play well?  Or will the previous week haunt him?  That is why fans must pay attention to the center-back.

In addition, fans should watch Tani Oluwaseyi.  The Minnesota forward has been having a great start to the 2025 season and has four goals thus far.  This includes his brace against Real Salt Lake that led his team to the win.  The Loons have some great offensive players, and he is someone the team will have to focus on.

Since this game is at home, and NYCFC is capable of beating Minnesota United, the prediction is that the team will win 3-1, and actually hold on to the lead.  Martins will redeem himself and Freese will have a stellar game between the sticks.
