Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn is facing an uncertain future with his contract at Carrow Road set to expire at the end of the season.

Gunn spent time in the Norwich academy before departing for Manchester City in 2011, but he did not make a single senior appearance during his time at the Etihad Stadium, and he returned to Norfolk on loan during the 2017-18 season.

After spells with Southampton and Stoke City, Gunn re-joined the Canaries for a second time in the summer of 2021 for a fee of around £2.5 million, and while he initially struggled to displace Tim Krul, he has been the club's number one for much of the last two seasons.

Gunn has impressed in the early weeks of the season for Norwich, but there are fears that he could be set for a spell on the sidelines after he withdrew from the Scotland squad due to the muscle injury he sustained in the 4-0 win over Hull City before the international break.

The 28-year-old was forced off at half time of the victory against the Tigers, and head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup admitted post-match that he was unsure about the extent of the problem, telling the Pink Un: "He had a knock to his ribs after catching the ball, one of these crosses when he went out there, and you can see he was struggling a little bit.

"I think it was more painful to him. Of course, we don't hope anything is broken, but you never know. And he was clear in half-time, he could not continue."

The Canaries recently tied second choice goalkeeper George Long down to a new three-year contract, and it remains to be seen whether they will attempt to reach a similar agreement with Gunn.

When asked whether the club should offer Gunn a new contract, FLW's Norwich City fan pundit Zeke Downes said that securing the Scotland international's future must be a priority for the Canaries.

"I think one of the priorities that we need to be looking at is tying down Angus Gunn to another contract because the drop to George Long is massive," Zeke said.

"For some reason, Long has got a new contract, so we're stuck with him.

"But Gunn is one of the best keepers in the league, if not the best, and we've relied on him a lot over the last two or three years.

"He's really vital in this new system, he makes a lot of saves, he's also good on the ball, he's not amazing on the ball, but I'd rather he was better at shot-stopping anyway.

"He's still a very good age and we do need him to sign a new deal."

Norwich City must resolve Angus Gunn future as soon as possible

It is difficult to disagree with Zeke that Norwich should look to reach an agreement with Gunn over a new contract.

After initially struggling to nail down his place in the team after re-joining the Canaries, Gunn has firmly established himself as first choice in recent years, and he has enjoyed an excellent start to the season for Thorup's side.

Gunn has previously been linked with Scottish giants Rangers, and while his uncertain performances during Euro 2024 this summer could deter Premier League clubs from making a move, he is still likely to have no shortage of interest as he enters the final six months of his contract at Carrow Road.
