Manchester United have made good progress under manager Ruben Amorim in recent games. They will aim to carry the momentum into tomorrow’s Premier League clash against Southampton.
Ahead of the encounter, the Portuguese tactician has a selection headache with Diogo Dalot ruled out. The 25-year-old is suspended after his sending off against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round.
In his absence, Tyrell Malacia looks the favourite for the left wing-back position, but Toby Collyer could be another solution, having played as a left-back against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.
Speaking to reporters, the manager said Collyer has been training with the team and has really good abilities. Amorim added that the 21-year-old is really humble, and he is another option to fill the void.
He told Manutd.com: “He’s here training with the team. He’s part of the squad and he has really good abilities, he has really good pace, he’s really humble and he works a lot, so he’s one more option.”
Collyer was linked with a potential loan exit earlier in the transfer window, but Amorim has changed his stance. The academy star recently came on as a second-half substitute against Arsenal.
The midfielder had a decent outing with four duels won alongside three clearances.
Collyer got the nod over Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, who were left on the bench and in our opinion, Amorim could plan to maximise his potential over the coming months.
It remains to be seen whether Collyer makes his full Premier League debut tomorrow. He could be a possible candidate for the left wing-back role if Amorim does not fancy Malacia.
Malacia has been unconvincing when he has started games under Amorim’s tutelage. The Netherlands international has yet to fully get up to speed after his long-term knee injury.
