Police have confirmed the arrest of 28 fans in Wroclaw after clashes between Chelsea and Real Betis fans before the Conference League final.

Violent clashes marred the build-up to the Conference League final in the Polish city.

Local police were forced to intervene to restore order, unleashing a water cannon on supporters gathered in the Polish city’s main square on Wednesday afternoon.

Lower Silesian Police said in a statement: "At this moment, we can confirm the arrest of 28 participants in the incident. No one will escape legal responsibility and the police will react decisively and appropriately to the situation."

The trouble broke out around five hours before kick-off at the Stadion Wroclaw.

Officers dressed in riot gear formed a barrier between the groups, with sirens heard across the town centre, and 28 arrests were made.

Bottles and chairs were used as missiles, while one photo showed a bloodied Chelsea fan being attacked by a Betis supporter wielding a belt.

"Zero tolerance for violence on our streets!" Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X in the aftermath.

"I thank the police for their decisive actions against the hooligans in Chelsea and Betis shirts in Wroclaw. We warn you: if necessary, the police will be even more ruthless!"

The scenes were in stark contrast with Tuesday night, when fans of the two clubs mingled across the city.

Betis fans have travelled to Poland in huge numbers for what is their first ever European final.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are seeking to cap Enzo Maresca’s first season with silverware after se-curing a return to the Champions League by beating Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

The Conference League final is due to kick off at 8pm BST.
