Our Premier League awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend’s top-flight action, featuring Myles Lewis-Skelly’s celebration and Everton’s reborn forward.
Arsenal’s rivalry with Manchester City has certainly increased in recent seasons, with sub-plot and narrative aplenty. The Gunners celebrated a famous win over the champions on Sunday, thrashing Pep Guardiola’s side 5-1 at the Emirates.
However, it was not enough for Arsenal to win in such style. Gabriel’s long-running feud with Erling Haaland continued with an overzealous celebration in the forward’s face, while Myles Lewis-Skelly made sure to make a point to the Norwegian.
Back in September, Haaland was at the centre of tensions between the teams. Alongside his now infamous ‘stay humble’ quip aimed at Mikel Arteta, he dismissed debutant Lewis-Skelly with the words ‘who the **** are you?’ when a scuffle broke out.
Since then, Lewis-Skelly has cemented a role in the Arsenal team and was outstanding in Sunday’s emphatic win. He slammed in the third goal and made sure to retaliate with a Haaland-inspired celebration in front of an ecstatic Emirates.
More fuel added to the fire of a growing rivalry.
For some players, despite struggles, there’s a will for them to succeed. Beto fits into that category. Things haven’t quite happened for the forward at Everton, whose emotion spilled over with a teary reaction to his last-gasp equaliser against Fulham in October.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s latest injury has handed Beto a chance in the side and he took it in some style this weekend.
The 27-year-old scored twice as Everton thrashed Leicester to record a third straight win under David Moyes. Beto’s brace was brilliantly taken, as he raced in behind to slide two cool finishes past Mads Hermansen. This could be the kickstart his career with the club needs.
Nuno Espirito Santo was shellshocked last weekend as Nottingham Forest were thrashed at Bournemouth. The season’s surprise package were beaten 5-0 in a performance in stark contrast to their campaign to date.
If Nuno demanded a response from Forest this weekend, he got it. The Tricky Trees were unstoppable to dismantle Brighton at the City Ground, winning 7-0 in a stunning performance. Chris Wood continued his great goal record against Brighton with a hat-trick, while Antony Elanga claimed a treble of assists on an unforgettable afternoon.
The club’s biggest top-flight win in almost 34 years was the perfect response to their heaviest defeat of the season. With Manchester City and Newcastle both beaten, Forest now have a six-point cushion in the race for Champions League football.
Liverpool rode their luck on occasion to win at Bournemouth this season, before securing a priceless win to strengthen their title challenge. It was a familiar face who did the damage on the south coast, as Mohamed Salah struck twice to make it 21 goals in the Premier League this season.
His second was a thing of beauty, bent into the far corner to seal the points.
At the other end, Liverpool required Alisson Becker to be at his best at Bournemouth. Some excellent stops from the Brazilian denied the Cherries, including this outstanding reflex save to stop a potential own goal. Still, arguably, the best in the business.
It feels as if almost every week there’s a new statistic that makes grim reading for Manchester United fans.
Here is the latest. Their worst start to a season on home soil for 130 years. The Theatre of Dreams has become a nightmare.
