The 2024-25 Premier League season rolls into gameweek ten.
This latest round kicks off on Saturday as Newcastle United welcome Arsenal in a lunchtime showdown at St. James’ Park.
As the weekend unfolds, eyes will be glued to Sunday when the spotlight shines on a marquee matchup. Chelsea will travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. The Red Devils recently decided to part ways with manager Erik ten Hag following their disappointing defeat to West Ham, leaving them in a precarious position as they seek to rediscover their winning ways.
Legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped in to manage the team, albeit on an interim basis. Having secured a vital win in their previous outing, Chelsea will look to inflict another loss on United and, in doing so, record their first league victory against them at the Theatre of Dreams in over a decade.
With all ten matches of gameweek ten on the horizon, we’ve looked at each fixture and offered our predicted scores.
After squandering their lead twice against Liverpool in their last match, Arsenal will be looking to end a two-game winless streak. Despite being unbeaten in their first 12 away games of the Premier League in 2024 (with ten wins and two draws), Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth in their previous away match. They last experienced consecutive away losses in May 2022, with the second defeat occurring at Newcastle.
On the other hand, the hosts recently ended a run of 11 games without a defeat at St James’ Park. This season, they have scored nine goals from an expected goals (xG) total of 14.3 in the Premier League, which means they have netted roughly five goals fewer than anticipated. Only Manchester United has a larger negative difference in the competition this season, with a difference of 8 goals and an xG of 14.8.
Describing this fixture as one-sided would be an understatement. Manchester City has won all 14 of their Premier League matches against Bournemouth, with an aggregate score of 45-7. This record represents the best 100% win rate any team has had against another in the history of the English top flight. Additionally, Bournemouth has lost all 11 of their Premier League games against teams that were at the top of the table on the day of the match, which is the worst 100% loss rate in the competition’s history. However, it’s worth noting that Bournemouth has won their last two Premier League home games, including a 2-0 victory over Arsenal most recently. They have only achieved three consecutive wins at the Vitality Stadium on three occasions previously, with the most recent instance occurring in March and April of this year.
Another meeting between promoted teams feels crucial, almost like a six-pointer. In their last Premier League away game, Leicester City came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 against fellow promoted side Southampton. This victory ended a streak of 11 away matches without a win for the Foxes, who last achieved consecutive away victories in November 2022 during a run of three wins.
Ipswich has been struggling with maintaining leads, as Kieran McKenna’s men has dropped 10 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, with only Brentford (11 points) having a worse record. In fact, the Tractor Boys recently let a two-goal lead slip away, ultimately losing 4-3 in their last match.
Liverpool‘s four-game winning streak came to an end in their last match, but Arne Slot’s team managed to come from behind twice to secure a draw against title rivals Arsenal while playing away. This upcoming game will also be a repeat of their EFL Cup meeting earlier this week, where Liverpool emerged victorious with a score of 3-2. Brighton has already shown their attacking prowess this season, scoring 16 goals from an expected goals (xG) total of 13.2 in the Premier League, which means they have scored roughly three goals more than expected. Only Leicester (13 goals from an xG of 9.1) and Wolves (12 goals from an xG of 8.9) have overperformed their xG by a larger margin.
However, Brighton will face a challenge as Liverpool has spent less time trailing in Premier League matches this season, with only Arsenal (41 minutes, 48 seconds) spending less time behind than Liverpool (75 minutes, 28 seconds). When Liverpool finds themselves behind, they have faced only two shots and conceded an xG of just 0.3 per 90 minutes, both of which are the league’s lowest figures for those metrics.
Nottingham Forest is in excellent form, having lost just one of their last ten league matches and winning back-to-back Premier League games leading up to this weekend. They are currently just outside the Champions League spots. A victory in this match would allow Forest to achieve three consecutive wins in the top flight for the first time since May 1999. They have a good chance of doing so, as they have won both of their Premier League home games against West Ham since their return to the league in 2022. The last time they won more consecutively against West Ham was between 1969 and 1978, when they achieved four straight victories.
Southampton’s return to England’s top division has been quite challenging, as they remain winless with only one point from their opening nine Premier League games this season (one draw and eight losses). The record for the fewest points earned in the first ten games of a Premier League season is one, held by Sheffield United in both the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons.
If this match had been played earlier in the campaign, it might have been more evenly matched, considering Everton was also struggling.
However, Sean Dyche’s team is currently unbeaten in their last five Premier League games (two wins and three draws), following a streak of five losses. The last time Everton had a longer unbeaten run was between August and October 2022 under Frank Lampard, when they went six games without a loss.
Wolves are having a tough start to the season, remaining winless in their first nine Premier League matches, with a record of two draws and seven losses. This marks their second-longest winless streak to begin a top-flight season, with their longest being 14 games back in the 1983-84 season.
It’s difficult to predict the scoreline of their upcoming match against Crystal Palace, especially considering that Palace has scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season, netting only six while conceding 11.
In contrast, Wolves have seen the most goals scored in their matches, totalling 37. Crystal Palace’s last three games have all ended with a score of 1-0, with one win and two losses, while Wolves haven’t had a match finish with a score of 1-0 since their game against Bournemouth in April.
You never know which Tottenham side will show up, as they have lost nine of their last 16 Premier League games (six wins, one draw). Only Wolves, with 12 losses, have fared worse since April in this same period. Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs initially lost only seven of their first 31 games (18 wins, six draws).
In 2024, Spurs have conceded the first goal in 11 of their 13 home Premier League matches but have managed to come back and win seven of those games. The only team to achieve more home wins after conceding the first goal in a single year is Newcastle United, who did so in 2002 with eight wins.
Ange Postecoglou’s team should be concerned as only Liverpool (13) and Nottingham Forest (11) have earned more away Premier League points this season than Aston Villa, who have gathered 10 points (three wins, one draw). Villa has only won four of their first five away league games in a season once before, achieving this in the 2020-21 season (four wins, one loss).
First things first, the match between Manchester United and Chelsea is the most drawn fixture in Premier League history, with 26 of their previous 64 meetings ending in a draw. This match will mark United’s first Premier League game in the post-Erik ten Hag era. Currently, they have accumulated only 11 points from their first nine Premier League matches this season (three wins, two draws, and four losses), which is their second-lowest total after nine games, just ahead of the 2019-20 season, when they had 10 points. The only other times Manchester United have lost four of their first nine Premier League games were in the last two campaigns under Ten Hag.
Fulham enters this match unbeaten in their last five London derbies in the Premier League, with two wins and three draws. The last time they had a longer unbeaten streak against fellow London teams was during the 2006-07 season, when they went seven matches without a loss.
We can expect a high-scoring game, as Brentford has conceded eight goals in their last three Premier League matches. However, they managed to win both games where they allowed three goals, defeating Wolves 5-3 and Ipswich 4-3. Prior to these matches, Brentford had not won a Premier League game after conceding three or more goals, with a record of four draws and nineteen losses.
