The Champions League final takes place this weekend with perhaps two of the most unlikely contenders in Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan. Both sides have pulled off a series of giant killings that have seen them secure their place in the showpiece at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday 31st May at 8pm (UK time). This is only PSG’s second Champions League final, while Inter have won the competition three times and are in their seventh final. The game will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1. Find below our match preview and best bets which include a 25/1 longshot.
For my main selection on Saturday I’ve dipped my toe into the goalkeeper saves market. Inter have conceded 6.83 shots on target per game in the knockout phase of the tournament. They seem happy to let teams have shot distance and soak up pressure, which should certainly be a boost for this selection. PSG have forced opposition goalkeepers into 5.1 saves per game in the Champions League this season and I’m surprised to see 6/4 on offer for them to match that in a game where they should dominate possession.
I’ve already spoken about how I expect Paris Saint-Germain to rack up the attempts in the final and one player who can hopefully get in on the action is Vitinha. The midfielder has let off 41 shots from outside the area this season with 13 of those hitting the target. With Inter defending deep,
Calhanoglu has played 46 games this season, recording 52 shots from outside the area. Of those attempts on goal, 14 of hit the target. The Turkish midfielder will also be on free-kick duty for Inter Milan increasing his chances of testing Donnarumma. This bet weighs in at 4/1 for both players to record a shot on target, however by backing them to hit the target from outside the area pays 25/1, and is well worth a couple of quid. This selection can be found in the match stat specials on both Paddy Power and Betfair.
PSG are desperate to win their first ever Champions League, which would be the club’s crowning achievement since being taken over by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011. Their only previous final appearance came in a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 season — with no fans present inside the ground. Their chances of making this year’s final were expected to be low after losing Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, having also let go of Neymar and Lionel Messi the year before. But Luis Enrique’s men have rallied without those three key players, after a disappointing initial group stage. They won four, drew one and lost three of their first eight matches and had to go through the play-offs – before hammering Brest 10-0 on aggregate. From there on, they have put on some impressive displays, first knocking out Premier League champions Liverpool before seeing off Aston Villa and then Arsenal in the semi-finals.
Inter Milan have quietly gone about their business in the Champions League this season, not blowing teams away, but putting in a series of consistent displays. Their won four of their first five games without conceding a goal and finished fourth in the group. They then saw off Feyenoord in the last-16 before edging Bayern Munich in the quarters. A huge task was put before them against Barcelona in the semis but they pipped them to the final after two dramatic ties — including a last minute winner in extra time to win 4-3 in the second leg.
Ousmane Dembele was not fit enough to start PSG’s second leg victory over Arsenal this week after picking up a hamstring strain in the first tie. But he was brought on as a substitute and should be fine to play in the final.
Inter came through their gruelling semi-final tie against Barcelona unscathed after extra-time but there are still question marks over defender Benjamin Pavard. The Frenchman missed both legs of the semi-final after spraining his ankle against Roma at the beginning of May.
PSG and Inter Milan have surprisingly never played against each other competitively.
