Carlton Palmer claims QPR would be 'crazy' to sack Marti Cifuentes and replace him with Gregory Vignal.
Carlton Palmer believes QPR would be making a mistake if they sack Marti Cifuentes and replace him with Gregory Vignal.
Reports from France have claimed that the former Liverpool left-back has been discussed as a replacement for Cifuentes due to the R’s terrible start to the Championship season.
The Londoners are bottom of the table having won just once in 15 games, whilst they’re already five points from safety.
Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that Cifuentes is under pressure, even if the Spaniard did an excellent job to keep QPR in the Championship last season.
However, speaking to FLW, ex-England international Palmer made it clear that he thinks Cifuentes would be able to repeat that feat this time around if he remains in charge.
Furthermore, he was baffled by the links to Vignal, as his only previous experience was with Rangers Women's side and Versailles, a French semi-professional outfit in the third tier, where he lasted just ten games.
“Cifuentes was linked with other jobs because of the work he has done with QPR last season, and I think it’s crazy to be even looking to replace him at this moment in time.
“The name that has been mentioned is Vignal, the former Liverpool defender, who is supposedly of interest to QPR.
“He was previously in the French third tier, but only remained in charge for 10 games.
“It’s crazy to be talking about replacing Cifuentes with a man that has got little or no experience. I think with Cifuentes, although it’s been a difficult start, it’s one of those where QPR have just got to see this through. He will sort it out.
“I think the supporters will be disappointed to hear the club are even looking at replacing Cifuentes. As I say, he could’ve moved on, but he didn’t. They haven’t been blessed with funds to bring in all the players he would’ve wanted, but they should be doing better than they are.
“They won’t get relegated if they stay with Cifuentes, I’m 100% convinced of that. It’s crazy to be thinking of sacking him and replacing him with somebody who has virtually no experience, and certainly no experience at this level.
“In the situation QPR are in at the moment, they need somebody with experience.”
Most would agree with Palmer’s assessment here when it comes to Vignal.
That’s not to say that unproven coaches shouldn’t be given a chance, as he could impress in an interview with his ideas for the team. Nevertheless, the reality is that he doesn’t have the CV for such a role with a Championship club right now.
Whether QPR should sack Cifuentes will likely cause debate, as the side just aren’t performing well, even if he does have credit in the bank from last season.
However, if he does depart in the coming days, weeks or months, the QPR faithful will want an experienced replacement as they are likely to be in a dire situation.
