Real Madrid’s Pursuit of Mac Allister: Anfield Unmoved by European Interest

As Liverpool prepare to lift the Premier League trophy after an unforgettable season under Arne Slot, rumours swirl around one of their central stars. According to a report by Fichajes, Real Madrid are targeting Alexis Mac Allister as the long-term successor to Luka Modric, who is preparing for an emotional farewell at the Santiago Bernabéu.

This isn’t your usual transfer rumour. It’s a calculated move by Los Blancos, with Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid’s recruitment chief Juni Calafat identifying the Argentine midfielder as the ideal piece in their evolving midfield puzzle. The report from Fichajes states: “Real Madrid has set its sights on Alexis Mac Allister with the firm intention of making him the natural successor to Luka Modric.”

Mac Allister’s Rise at Liverpool

Mac Allister’s stock has soared since joining Liverpool from Brighton. His tactical intelligence, press resistance, and ability to dictate tempo have made him one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. His integration under Slot has been seamless, with the Argentine often deployed as a deep-lying playmaker who knits together defence and attack.

The Fichajes report notes, “His leading role in Liverpool’s system has made him an untouchable figure for Arne Slot,” and it’s no exaggeration. Mac Allister has arguably become the heartbeat of Slot’s title-winning side. Liverpool aren’t just enjoying his performances, they’re building around them.

Why Real Madrid Want Him

With Luka Modric, 39, leaving behind a legacy of elegance and endurance, Real Madrid are not looking for a like-for-like replacement but someone who embodies intelligence, versatility, and technical excellence. The same report adds, “Mac Allister’s name has gained traction as one of the most complete players in European football today.”

Madrid’s midfield is already stacked with talent – the likes of Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, and Aurélien Tchouaméni offer dynamism and physicality. What Mac Allister could bring is balance – a cerebral, press-resistant midfielder who could offer calm in high-stakes situations, and an ability to pick locks with the ball.

Transfer Fee and Liverpool’s Stance

Mac Allister’s reported valuation is €90 million. For context, that’s nearly double what Liverpool paid Brighton for his services less than a year ago. It’s also symbolic of how crucial he’s become to Liverpool’s new era.

Fichajes make clear the difficulty Madrid face: “The deal is complex… Anfield is not willing to let him leave easily, aware of his influence in midfield.” Liverpool are not in the business of selling cornerstones, especially not to rivals in European competition. With Slot already preparing for next season’s Champions League campaign, weakening the squad is not on the agenda.

Liverpool’s resolve, combined with their financial strength and recent silverware, means this saga may not go far – unless Mac Allister pushes for the move, which there’s currently no suggestion of.

Strategic Thinking from Madrid, But a Long Shot

There’s no denying Mac Allister fits Madrid’s evolving model: players entering their prime, with experience in elite leagues and tactical maturity. His ability to operate in various midfield roles makes him an attractive option for Alonso, who knows the demands of the Bernabéu midfield better than most.

Still, unless something changes significantly from the player’s side, this may be more admiration than a concrete possibility. Liverpool’s project is thriving under Arne Slot, and Mac Allister is central to it.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

As Liverpool fans, we’ve seen this movie before. A few great performances in red and suddenly our players are linked with half of Europe. It’s flattering but also tiring.

Yes, Mac Allister is that good. He’s calm, smart, and makes the midfield tick – especially now with Szoboszlai and Gravenberch rotating around him. The €90 million tag? Fair, maybe even low given today’s market. But do we really see him walking away from a project like this?

Slot has come in and done what few thought possible – win the Premier League in his debut season. Mac Allister has been massive in that, and you could argue he’s already a leader in that dressing room. The idea of him giving that up for a role in Madrid’s rotation? Doesn’t sit right.

Of course, Madrid are big. The biggest maybe. And Xabi Alonso pulling strings might tempt some South Americans with that old Bernabéu mystique. But Mac Allister has just settled in, has the full backing of the club, and is about to lift a Premier League title. Why leave now?

Unless he forces it, Liverpool won’t even pick up the phone. And with the club already planning for next season’s Champions League push and possibly more domestic silverware, this one feels like wishful thinking from Madrid. Credit to Fichajes for sparking the conversation, but this one should be dead in the water.
