As Liverpool conclude a stirring season atop English football, voices across Anfield and beyond are turning their thoughts to celebration, reflection and what’s to come under Arne Slot. In the latest episode of Scouser Tommies on Anfield Index, hosts Jim Boardman and Jay Reid navigated everything from player departures to fan reactions, offering both sharp insight and sincere sentiment as the club prepares for a trophy-laden parade.
The conversation opened with a delicate topic — Trent Alexander-Arnold’s situation at the club. “I’m not sure how the reaction to Trent is going to be,” admitted Boardman. “I think it’ll be mixed… everybody has probably digested it a bit now and accepted it one way or the other.”
Jay Reid emphasised the strategic decisions behind Arne Slot’s selections, particularly in light of the future. “Slot’s even said… Mac Allister’s not going to feature because he’s had a really busy season… he’s thinking of next year already and Trent’s not here next year.”
This revelation is not without consequence. Reid speculated: “I don’t actually think he’ll get on the field… he’s in the squad, but I don’t need him. Don’t need to use him.” The hosts suggested Slot was tactically “savvy” to include Trent without fielding him, a nod to fans and media alike, avoiding unwanted spotlight in a celebratory fixture.
Much of the discussion revolved around players potentially bidding farewell to Anfield. Chief among them was Joe Gomez. “Joe Gomez is one of the players that deserves a goodbye,” said Boardman, expressing a sentiment shared by many supporters.
Another name floated was Darwin Núñez. “Feels like it’s pretty nailed on he’s going to be going somewhere,” remarked Reid, adding, “It’s sad. It’s a shame it didn’t work out. We did love him.”

Reflecting on players past and present, Boardman recalled, “Vladimir [Smicer] is one that jumps to mind… there’s been players that we’ve known we’re not going to see at Anfield again.” The pair agreed that when the club controls the departure, “you’re always welcome back,” a theme that binds Liverpool’s tradition to its modern identity.
Looking ahead to Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade, the hosts gave practical advice to fans keen to join. “Try and get into the city if you can on Monday,” urged Reid. “The way the city is, once you’re in it, you should be able to get yourself around to go and see them.”
The atmosphere was likened to past glories. “If you’re savvy, you’ll probably catch it in both places,” said Reid, referencing the route along Queens Drive and into the city centre. Boardman added, “If you’re in and around, I’m sure the atmosphere will be amazing.”
The podcast closed with heartfelt advice: “Just enjoy it… you never know when the next one is,” said Boardman, capturing the moment’s significance. “It’s been a hell of a season.”
As attention turns to next season, both hosts offered praise for Liverpool’s new manager. “No one I know has got any problem at all with Slot,” declared Reid. “Even the most sort of cantankerous people… can’t think of anyone who’s got anything bad to say about him.”
While some in the media may attempt to manufacture divides, Boardman was unequivocal: “They’re hoping to stick a knife in between us and Slot, which is just not going to happen.”
With Liverpool on top of English football and a unified club behind Arne Slot, the red tide shows no signs of retreat.
