Serie A giants Napoli have reportedly earmarked Inter Milan stalwart Stefan de Vrij as their ‘number one’ target for the summer.
According to Kiss Kiss Napoli via FCInterNews, Antonio Conte sees the 32-year-old as a potential upgrade on his defensive options.
De Vrij has been loyal to Inter since joining the club from Lazio in 2018.
However, the reigning Scudetto holders have hesitated to offer him fresh terms at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
With the Dutchman’s contract running out at the end of the season, a summer exit is a distinct possibility.
Yet, Inter still have time to retain De Vrij’s services.
De Vrij’s contractual wobble at Meazza gives Napoli hope that they could lure him south for free.
But the Dutchman’s reassuring performance in the past few months could change Inter’s mind.
With Francesco Acerbi on the sidelines, De Vrij has assumed the role of Inzaghi’s defensive leader.
And he has flourished.
Inter can take confidence from De Vrij’s desire to stay. Indeed, he reportedly turned down Napoli’s advances in recent days.
The situation could change in the summer unless the Nerazzurri tie him down to a new deal by then.
