Morgan Rogers said Aston Villa’s hard-fought 1-0 win at Everton is a ‘sweeter’ feeling than more comfortable victories this season.

Unai Emery’s side continued their perfect start to the new year with a third consecutive win at Goodison Park. Ollie Watkins scored the only goal of the game after a brilliant through pass from Rogers, as Villa spoiled David Moyes’s return to the Everton dugout.

The hosts should have snatched a point late on, only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to blaze an attempt over the crossbar when well placed.

Victory moves Villa up to seventh and within just three points of the Champions League places.

Speaking to Premier League productions at full-time, Rogers hailed an ‘outstanding’ defensive performance from Villa, who ended a run of five away games without a win. The victory was Villa’s first on the road in the Premier League since October 19.

“It’s a big win. We knew beforehand we had to win and get through this drought away from home,” Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, speaking to Premier League Productions, said.

“It’s such a tough place to come, and we were scraping in the second half but those wins are sweeter than the ones where you win comfortably.

“My job is to provide and Ollie [Watkins] movement is so good. He is so good at holding the ball up in the channels and taking the pressure off.

“We defended the box really well. We had to be strong and resolute and we were outstanding defensively. We’ve got three wins in the new year and we will keep pushing on.”
