Red Devils skipper is now said to be seriously considering a lucrative offer to join Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia
The Red Devils captain came into the starting lineup for the final match of their post-season tour of Asia against Hong Kong on Friday, just hours after fresh reports that he was now “seriously considering” a lucrative offer to move to Saudi Arabia this summer.
Fernandes has been linked with a potential switch to Al-Hilal for some time now, though both the player and his manager have been publicly adamant that he wants to remain, with United desperate to make the necessary changes to prove to their influential leader that he should stay put despite a truly torrid season that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League table and lose the Europa League final to Tottenham.
However, the latest speculation before kick-off in Hong Kong was that the Portuguese was now strongly thinking about a reported final take-it-or-leave-it proposal from the Saudi outfit that would supposedly see him earn around £700,000 a week and a total of £200million across three seasons, including bonuses.
Al-Hilal are also rumoured to be willing to pay a transfer fee of approximately £100m to land a marquee signing ahead of the inaugural expanded summer Club World Cup in the United States, a vast sum that could be important to United in terms of conducting their own transfer business this summer.
Asked after the Chido Obi-inspired comeback win over Hong Kong, Amorim told reporters when asked if Fernandes might now have played his last game for United: “I don’t think so. I don’t know for sure, nobody knows, but I don’t think so.
“I think he’s seeing us taking some actions to change all the things and I think it’s all that he asks.
“I think he wants to stay, he’s saying no to a lot of things. It shows that he wants to win. I think he’s really young, he’s really good. He needs to be in the best league in the world.”
Fernandes, 30, remains under contract at United until 2027, with the club possessing the option for a further year beyond that after the two parties agreed to an extension last August.
Many feel that the fee on offer from Al-Hilal - who also reportedly want to make Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi their new manager after this weekend’s Champions League final - is simply too much for United to turn down, though Amorim insists that is not the case.
“We can find another way to earn money,” he said.
Asked about Fernandes again later in the press conference, Amorim added: “The feeling I have, every time I speak to him, is he wants to continue with Manchester United, for sure.”
United trailed again on their tour of Asia despite dominating against Hong Kong, only for Obi to come off the bench and inspire a 3-1 comeback victory with a timely brace that was followed by a last-gasp header from Ayden Heaven.
Amorim was delighted with Obi’s impact as a substitute and the performances of all United’s youngsters on Friday.
“I think he proved already in the Under-18s that he can score goals,” Amorim said of Obi. “The Premier League is a completely different world. It’s a good start, he is working really well. I was really pleased with all the kids tonight.”
