The manager said the goal celebrations were the best he had ever heard
Ruben Amorim psyched himself up for Manchester United’s extraordinary 5-4 Europa League win over Lyon by rewatching a documentary about the Red Devil’s historic treble-winning season of 1998/99.
Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire scored last-minute goals deep into extra-time to ensure United turned their quarter-final tie with Lyon on its head and prevailed 7-6 on aggregate after a barnstorming second leg at Old Trafford.
United were heading out to the 10 men of Lyon, but with a matter of minutes to play, the England duo popped up with crucial goals to set up a semi-final against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao.
Amorim revealed after the match that he rewatched ‘99’, the Amazon Prime Video three-part special about United’s 1999 treble-winning team, to inspire him ahead of their crunch match against Lyon.
“I was watching, again the ‘99’ documentary, to have some inspiration for these moments. It was a great night,” Amorim told TNT Sports.
“I think the team were tired, and you could feel it during the game. At 4-2 [to Lyon], with one more player, you think it’s over. But it’s never over. Here, anything is possible.
“I think we started well, but we are not really consistent to maintain the game in the same way. Your reflection as a team is the league, and we are underperforming, but you have to see the context.”
Amorim believes reaching the semi-finals after being minutes away from crashing out of the competition can give his team the belief to go all the way in Europe’s second-tier competition this season.
“It’s one moment that can change a lot things,” said Amorim, whose side languish in 14th place in the Premier League.
“Sometimes we just look at the tactical aspect or the physical aspect, but these types of moments can change a lot.”
Asked whether United can win the Europa League, he said: “Yes, you can see it in the stadium. Everyone believes it can be possible. The sound of the stadium for the goals by Harry Maguire and Kobbie was the best sound I ever [heard]. They [the fans] are crazy.”
