Rummenigge wants Bayern Munich to sign German star in summer

Bayern Munich have big plans for the attacking department of the squad in the summer. Harry Kane is expected to stay, which suggests the number nine position is settled for at least next season. The focus will be more on the wide positions since the Bavarian club is ready to move on multiple wingers in the summer.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz is the top target for Bayern for the next transfer window. It is one of the worst-kept secrets in football this season that Rekordmeister will go all out for the German star in the summer. The German attacking midfielder has been in sublime form this season, making him one of the most coveted attacking players in Europe.

While talking to AZ, Bayern’s supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insisted that Wirtz is currently the best German player. Rummenigge believes that Die Roten should do everything possible to sign Wirtz in the summer.

The former club CEO believes Bayern need Wirtz to strengthen the squad. He also insisted that there is an agreement across the hierarchy at Bayern that Wirtz is the top target for the next transfer window.

"For me, Florian Wirtz is the best player in Germany. And I make no secret of the fact that it must be our clear goal to sign Wirtz. Everyone at FC Bayern agrees that he is exactly the player we want to sign - not to weaken Leverkusen, but to strengthen ourselves."Karl Heinz-Rummenigge

Bayer Leverkusen reluctant to sell Wirtz to Bundesliga rival

While the interest from Bayern in Wirtz is concrete, it is going to be a big challenge for the record champions to complete the deal. Bayer Leverkusen are in no mood to lose one of their best players to their Bundesliga rival.

Real Madrid are also reportedly interested in the young German star. If Wirtz pushes for a transfer away from Leverkusen in the summer, Bayer Leverkusen will prefer selling him to Real Madrid than Bayern.

Bayer Leverkusen took a hard stance while negotiating with Bayern for Jonathan Tah last season. They rejected multiple bids from Bayern for the German defender even though they faced the risk of losing Tah on a free transfer in 2025. The defending Bundesliga champions will make life harder for Bayern if they come all guns blazing for Wirtz.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s current deal at Bayer Leverkusen expires in 2027. There have been reports in Germany suggesting that Leverkusen is working on a contract extension for Wirtz. A new deal in the next couple of months will certainly rule out Wirtz leaving Leverkusen in the summer.

Bayern will look for short-term options in the summer if Wirtz stays in Leverkusen. It looks inevitable that Die Roten will end up signing him. It remains to be seen whether they will get him in the summer or 2026.
