Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has said that he is willing to continue at the club after a permanent boss is confirmed.

The Red Devils recently parted company with Erik ten Hag following a run of just four wins from 14 appearances across all competitions.

United showed plenty of patience towards the Dutchman, but they eventually sacked him after a 2-1 Premier League loss at West Ham United.

Van Nistelrooy had a superb debut game as United manager in midweek. The club secured a comfortable 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The 48-year-old will continue to remain in charge for the next three games, with Ruben Amorim unlikely to take control before the international break.

Speaking at today’s press conference, Van Nistelrooy said that he will become an assistant once United confirms the arrival of a permanent manager

He said: “As an assistant and now as an interim manager – after that I go back to my assistant contract that I have here for this season and next.

“I’m very motivated to stay here and help the club forward. That’s my absolute goal.”

When pressed on whether he will be part of the backroom staff, the former Premier League striker added that the decision will be made by the new manager.

He added: “We will see, but it’s a contract situation that I’m in. My desire is to help the club forward, so I can speak to you about my side of this story.

“After that, when the new situation is occurring, when the new manager is signing, and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop.

“I want to help. I want to do everything I can in my abilities, as many others do in this club, to fight for this club.

“The club is in a difficult situation, and it is not where we all wanted to be, but the challenge is there. That’s why I’m here.”

Van Nistelrooy made a perfect start with a comfortable win over the Foxes. He was partly helped by the visitors fielding a weaker starting line-up.

He faces his first major challenge against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday. If United were to beat the Blues, Van Nistelrooy could enhance his CV.

This could put him in a decent position to convince Amorim to keep him as part of the backroom staff.

The Dutchman could also attract offers from Premier League clubs based on United’s progress in the next few games.
