Schalke have announced that they have sacked head coach Kees van Wonderen with immediate effect following their 2-0 loss to Paderborn on Friday evening.

die Königsblau’s reasoning for the sacking was the poor performances against Kaiserslautern last weekend and Paderborn on Friday. The Dutch head coach and the club already agreed to part ways in the summer, but that decision has been brought forward.

Youri Mulder, Schalke’s Director of Football, said:

“The way things have been and are developing over the past two weeks is particularly cause for concern. We’re only six points away from the relegation zone, and the trend is negative. That’s why we’ve decided to react now. We have a responsibility to the club.”

In his place, Jacob Fimpel, Schalke’s under-23 head coach, will take charge for the final two games of the season against Fortuna Düsseldorf and Elversberg. Fimpel took charge earlier in the season against Preußen Münster and Hertha Berlin before van Wonderen replaced Karel Geraerts.

The long-term replacement for van Wonderen is rumoured to be former Kaiserslautern head coach Markus Anfang. Incoming Schalke sporting director Frank Baumann has previously worked with Anfang at Werder Bremen.
