Manchester United fans are going to have to wait considerably longer than they’d hoped before they can see their new manager take to the dugout.

It seems as though it’s now a case of crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s between the Red Devils, Sporting Lisbon and Ruben Amorim, with the latter poised to succeed Erik ten Hag after he was relieved of his duties on Monday morning.

Last Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United marked the final nail in the coffin for INEOS chiefs, who had reportedly been sounding out potential replacements in the weeks leading up to the Dutchman’s sacking.

As such, club executives were proactive in kickstarting negotiations with Amorim. He gave his green light to the move instantaneously, but further talks were required between United and Sporting to try and determine the most suitable way to terminate Amorim’s 2026 contract.

It was eventually disclosed that the Reds intended to fork out the 39-year-old’s £8.3 million release clause. Sporting then demanded a further £4.1m to sanction the exits of Amorim’s backroom staff – hence why Ruud van Nistelrooy is expected to leave entirely when his spell as interim comes to an end.

Amorim’s Old Trafford arrival delayed until after November 10

He may be at the reins for a while longer, though, as Ben Jacobs has announced tonight that Amorim is now expected to remain with Sporting until their clash against Braga on Sunday, November 10, after which club action pauses for yet another international break.

“Ruben Amorim is set to stay at Sporting until Braga on November 10. Portuguese sources insist an announcement could come as early as tomorrow. Both clubs declined to comment,” Jacobs relayed on X/Twitter.

Therefore, the coach’s first fixture in charge of United would come on November 24 in a trip to face Premier League newbies Ipswich Town, while Van Nistelrooy will oversee matches against Chelsea (PL), PAOK (EL) and Leicester City (PL).
