The 22-year-old has spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Stoke City, and whilst it has been a tough period for the Potters, Cannon has impressed, scoring nine goals in 22 games.

Therefore, interest has been building in the former Everton man, and it was announced this morning that Leicester had officially recalled the player, which many presume is ahead of a potential sale.

Sheffield United and Sunderland agree deal for Tom Cannon

It was revealed last night that Sunderland had made a late bid to move ahead of the Blades for Cannon, as they proposed taking the player on loan before committing £13m if they were promoted.

However, in a late twist, journalist Alan Nixon revealed that Sheffield United have now also made an acceptable offer to Leicester.

He states that the Yorkshire outfit have offered £10m guaranteed to the Foxes, with a further £3m in add-ons, in a deal that would be a permanent switch this month.

The reporter adds that it’s now down to the player to decide where he wants to go, although it’s said that Sheffield United are believed to be able to offer a higher salary to Cannon, which could prove pivotal.

Tom Cannon can be decisive in promotion battle

We know that January is a busy month, and the battle for promotion is extremely tight, so signing a goalscorer can be huge at this stage of the season.

Cannon has shown with Stoke this season, and Preston in the past, that he can be clinical in the Championship, so that’s why there is such interest in him.

Whether a deal worth up to £13m is good value is up for debate, but if Cannon scores the goals that can help a side reach the Premier League, then it will be money well spent.

Both Sheffield United and Sunderland have good strikers at the club, in Kieffer Moore and Wilson Isidor respectively, but there is a lack of depth behind the duo.

So, you can understand why both are in the mix for Cannon, and, at 22, he is a player who has room for development, and he could impress for the years to come.

Now, it seems it’s all on the player, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up, with a decision likely to come in the next few days.
