Sheffield United secured the double over Sheffield Wednesday with another 1-0 victory thanks to Rhian Brewster’s close-range finish right in front of the Wednesday kop.

Chris Wilder kept fans guessing all week with the availability of a couple of key players, but it was later revealed Vinicius Souza wasn’t fit enough to even be on the bench for the trip to Hillsborough. Callum O’Hare dropped to the bench in place of Rhian Brewster.

First Half

The Owls started the match on the front foot, dominating the early exchanges and pinning the Blades deep inside their own half. They applied relentless pressure, with Michael Smith forcing a strong save from goalkeeper Michael Cooper, after connecting with a pinpoint cross from Hatsuse on the left flank.

Tensions ran high as Callum Paterson, in a moment of frustration, kicked the ball at the grounded Ben Brereton Diaz after a foul had been committed. The heated exchange resulted in both players receiving yellow cards, with the United man also punished.

Despite Wednesday’s early dominance, the visitors grew into the game as the first half progressed. Brereton Diaz and Brewster spearheaded several threatening counter-attacks, pushing the home side onto the back foot.

And then a long throw from Robinson presented an opportunity for Campbell, who dragged his shot wide of the post. Moments later, the striker came within inches of meeting a clever through ball from the ever-lively Hamer, as the visitors continued to ask questions of Wednesday’s defence.

As the half neared its conclusion, the away side nearly grabbed the lead when Brereton Diaz set up Burrows. The left-back’s low-driven shot flashed dangerously across the face of goal, just out of Campbell’s reach, as Wednesday breathed a sigh of relief heading into the break.

Second Half

Wednesday came close to taking the lead with what was arguably the move of the game. Barry Bannan led a surging charge toward the United penalty area, slipping a precise pass to Michael Smith. With a clever flick, Smith set up Josh Windass, whose goal-bound strike from a promising position was deflected over the bar.

At the other end, Sheffield United made their second-half pressure count. Campbell showcased his skill, gliding past Michael Ihiekwe at the right byline before delivering a dangerous cross into the box. Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle managed to get a hand to it, but the power on the ball proved too much, allowing Rhian Brewster to pounce from six yards out and slot home the opener.

Buoyed by their lead, the Blades pushed for a second, almost capitalising on defensive uncertainty from the Owls. Peck unleashed a powerful shot from distance, but Beadle was equal to the effort, keeping Wednesday in the game.

As the match neared its conclusion, the home side nearly snatched a dramatic equaliser. A thunderous volley from substitute Marvin Johnson forced Cooper into a nervy fumble, and the rebound fell invitingly to Svante Ingelsson. However, with the goal at his mercy, the Swedish midfielder blazed his effort over the bar, letting United off the hook.

With the Blades securing the double over Wednesday for the first time since the 2005/06 season, they now join league leaders Leeds United on 80 points, and maintain that two-point advantage over third-place Burnley.
