Following a strong season on the pitch, which saw Danny Rohl’s side record a top-half finish in the Championship for the first time in six years, speculation is now rife ahead of what could be a pivotal summer for the club.

Rohl’s success with the team has resulted in several teams circling around the young boss, and his potential departure threatens to leave a bitter taste in the mouth after such a positive season.

As well as fighting to keep hold of the jewel in their crown, the Owls are also facing uncertainty behind the scenes. Controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri is once again coming under continuous criticism from fans, who held several marches and protests against his ownership towards the end of the season.

While similar demonstrations have failed to force the Thai businessman out in the past, this time around, they have seemingly had at least some effect on the owner.

With that in mind, FLW rounds up all the latest on the possibility of a takeover at Hillsborough.

Bid from an American consortium rejected

For all the talk about a potential takeover, news of a bid from an American consortium at the end of April remains the most recent official, concrete bid that has been made.

According to The Star, the offer came from "a Florida-based consortium made up of a collective of successful business people and professional athletes."

However, that offer was deemed as “derisory” by the club, who also added that the consortium offered no proof of funds, as well as failing to clarify the actual identity of the proposed investors.

Potential interest from up to three groups, but Chansiri is coy

The Star had previously reported that there were as many as three groups who were potentially lining up a deal, two from the USA and one from the UK, but as of yet, the Florida-based bid is the only one to have tabled a genuine offer.

News of these three interested parties came over a month ago, and, although the fact that only one concrete bid has reached public knowledge is a concern, the takeover of a football club is not a simple or quick process.

Chansiri has suggested that he is happy to leave if that is what the fans want, as he said in previous years, too.

However, the Owls chief has reiterated that it is not simply about finding someone who will make him an acceptable offer, but rather finding someone who is “the right individual or group” to take the club forward.

Chris Waddle believes Wednesday have been “going backwards” under Chansiri

Speaking in an exclusive interview with FLW, former Wednesday star Chris Waddle revealed that he feels the club have been going backwards for several years under Chansiri’s rule.

The former Owls and Marseille man said: “Chansiri had two great years. Took them to Wembley, lost, took them to the semi-final in the play-offs, lost. And after that, there was no plan B, and there was no money or structure to take the club on again and again.

“I think he failed a two-year plan, and ever since those two years, Sheffield Wednesday have basically been going backwards.”

The views of the S6 legend are far from uncommon around the club at present. The vast majority of fans feel that Chansiri is holding them back from progressing and heading towards bigger and better things as a club.
