Manchester United have emerged as surprised candidates in the race for ‘world-class’ Bayern Munich whiz Alphonso Davies, per Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg.

Reports circulated last night – via Sky Germany – claiming that the Red Devils had begun targeting Bayern trio Davies, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka, though securing the signatures of all three is far-fetched, to say the least.

Canadian international Davies has only gone from strength to strength since he left Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018 to test his resolve in Europe – and what a place to kickstart the next stage of his career. He was pursued by the German giants after being scouted from the MLS and, after initially making a handful of appearances for the club’s reserves, was quickly promoted to the first team.

He has since been an utterly irreplaceable figure at the heart of Bayern’s squad, tallying a remarkable 203 appearances at only 23 years of age. The fullback also, perhaps unsurprisingly, boasts five Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal titles, three Supercups and a Champions League – the latter of which came as part of a historical continental treble-winning campaign in 2020.

Unfortunately for transfer chiefs at Old Trafford, they may have to brace themselves for disappointment in pursuit of Davies.

Real Madrid have had their sights set on him for well over a year now and are widely expected to complete their long-awaited acquisition when his contract at the Allianz expires in the summer of 2025. The Bavarian outfit are doing their utmost to tie the starlet down to an extension, but, as it stands, their efforts are to no avail, which means Davies is free to talk to other interested clubs in January.

Plettenberg adds that Bayern are ‘open to’ returning to the ‘negotiating table’, so it’ll be worth keeping an eye on whether anything materialises between now and the end of the year. Losing such a high-quality, sought-after player for nothing will undoubtedly come as a considerable blow to the board.
