Gareth Southgate has dismissed speculation linking him with replacing Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager.

Southgate is without a role after stepping down as England manager following Euro 2024, having spent eight years in charge of the Three Lions.

The 54-year-old led England to a first World Cup semi-final in 28 years in 2018 and successive European Championship finals, though suffered defeat in deciders against Italy and Spain.

Southgate is assessing his next challenge and a potential return to club football but has insisted he intends to take an extended break from football.

The former England boss has been named as a potential candidate to replace Ten Hag at Manchester United, as the latter’s position comes under threat following the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.

Southgate has a strong relationship with Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth, having worked together during the latter’s time with the FA. His transformation of the culture with the England national team has earned Southgate further admirers in the Old Trafford hierarchy.

However, Southgate has distanced himself from the rumours and said he is ‘certain’ that he will not return to management ‘in the next year’.

Southgate: “I won’t coach for the next year.”

“I won’t coach in the next year, for sure. I’m certain of that,” Southgate said at ECA Europe general assembly, via BBC reporter Simon Stone.

“I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.”
