Goalkeeper Josep Martinez could finally make his first appearance for Inter Milan in Sunday’s Serie A match against Venezia.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
Inter signed Martinez over the summer transfer window from Genoa.
The 26-year-old is the player who the Nerazzurri have brought in to be the long-term successor to Yann Sommer in goal.
That does not mean that Inter signed Martinez to replace Sommer right away. The former Bayern Munich keeper is continuing to hold down his spot with good performances.
But Sommer is now well into his thirties.
So Inter’s plan has always been clear. They wanted to bring in a young keeper who could be the understudy to Sommer for a season or two, and then take over.
Martinez is the player the Nerazzurri identified for that role.
The Spaniard impressed with his performances for Genoa last season.
So far, Martinez has yet to make a single appearance for Inter.
Sommer has been a hard man to displace from the starting spot in goal for the Nerazzurri.
Therefore, former RB Leipzig and Las Palmas keeper Martinez has had to be patient.
But according to Tuttosport, the wait may not be all that much longer.
The newspaper notes that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is ready to overhaul his starting eleven on Sunday as the Nerazzurri host Venezia in Serie A.
Inter are in the midst of a hectic period in the fixture list. They are playing virtually three times a week.
Inter just travelled to Empoli yesterday. But they have three more matches before the start of the November international break – including huge matches against Arsenal and Napoli.
Therefore, Inzaghi is ready to make changes all over the pitch this Sunday.
And, for the first time this season, that could include in goal. Martinez could get his first chance to start for Inter.
